Hutchinson Island Terminal, LLC, dba Island Barging Company is located across from River Street in Savannah, GA. It has a three acre staging area for deliveries that is fenced in and lighted. The operation is staffed from 8am to 4PM five days a week for a pickup receiving function for customers and large shipments (700 tons +) can be prestaged when needed for bulk materials (sand, gravel, stone, etc)
The tug is a ninety six ton push boat vessel 57 feet by 22 feet and 8 feet in depth. The tug is powered with twin turbocharged diesel caterpillar engines. The barge is 150 ft by 50 ft with a “wall” to be able to carry bulk material such as sand and gravel for a cement job.
The barge has a 50 foot ramp for loading and discharging its cargo. To give you an idea of the carrying capacity, it has carried twelve fully loaded asphalt trucks at one time and fully loaded cement trucks when necessary. The barge has also assisted in removing log trailers from islands that wanted to harvest the lumber. It has transported over forty modular home units and double wide trailers from time to time. It has also carried 150 ton cranes to set the modular homes.
See "Equipment Page" for the ancillary equipment that supports the barge and tug operation which customers find most helpful.
The operating service area is currently from Jacksonville, FL to Charleston, SC with significant barge services to Daufuskie Island just a mile south of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The barge and tug operation started in the mid 1980’s as part of International Paper to develop 1,000 + acres on Daufuskie Island (Haig Point) just off Hilton Head Island, S.C. It changed to current ownership in 2002 and has been responsible for most of the development on Daufuskie including all other developments on the island in addition to Haig Point.
The operation prides itself on superior customer service with a “can do” attitude and has an outstanding safety record due to a very dedicated core team and meticulously maintained equipment.
